WHITMAN / REX
Kentucky Derby Horse Racing Game
Whitman manufactured a
number of sports-themed games
during it's lengthy tenure as one of the top board game producers in
the USA. One of the mainstays of the line were a series of racing
games: Kentucky Derby, Regatta and Stock Car Racing. These were
intended for a younger audience so game action was driven by a very
simple spin the number and move the token mechanism. All 3 feature nice
period artwork. The artwork for the Kentucky Derby game was changed a
number of times as were the names of the horses running. I believe the
other 2 kept the same artwork throughout their production.
This particular game is an
original, pre-Whitman, version of the
Kentucky Derby game. The game was originally produced by a company
called Rex Manufacturing. Whitman bought the rights to the game shortly
after this came out.
The game parts are in VERY
GOOD condition. It is intact and includes all 5 plastic racehorses.
Unfortunately it has suffered some foxing (small brown spots) over the
years. Overall I would grade the game parts 5 on a 10 scale (see
condition guide below).
The game box is in VERY GOOD condition. It is in
nice shape but has suffered the same foxing as the inside of the game.
I would grade it a 5-6 on a 10 scale (see condition guide below).
(10): I will only give this grade
to brand new, unused items. NEAR MINT (9):
Shows virtually no use. Seldom if ever played.
Perhaps some very light handling creases to the
or other minor flaws with the game parts. Boxes will have
the slightest hint of shelf wear. EXCELLENT (7-8):
The game has seen some use but it was obviously well taken care of.
some light handling creases or other signs of
careful use. Board might have just a hint of color loss or
corners. Boxes will have light rubbing to the artwork or
some minor dishing or a very light stain. VERY GOOD (5-6):
The game was not especially well cared for but it still has
faired pretty well. Game
parts will show obvious use but nothing will be torn, badly
stained or have any serious damage. Box may have
rubbing, light staining, dishing, 1 or 2 neatly split corners,
minor writing and/or a few pieces of tape. No major
damage and artwork will still be generally attractive. GOOD (3-4):
Obviously no care was taken with the game but it is still playable as
is. Game parts show
considerable use but the game is complete with all parts in
condition. Box may have staining, writing, split
dishing and/or other structural damage but it will be intact and still
Only suitable to fill a space in your collection.
Game will be missing
parts (these will be noted). Box will have serious damage and
be missing aprons or badly torn.
